johnson again defending office

Current Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson is an incompetent boob, who can’t keep his own finances straight, much less run an election.
And there he was again Tuesday night, trying to explain computer problems that Hillsborough County experienced. It was a database communications glitch caused by vendor Premiere Election Solutions (formerly known as [...]

Tampa Police Chief Stephen Hogue says Tampa’s crime rate dropped 12 percent in the first six months of 2008 compared with last year.
During the first six months of this year, 9,126 offenses were reported in seven crime categories, 12 percent less than the 10,367 reported in these categories from January to June 2007.
The biggest statistical [...]

gee, my bad

St. Pete cops call Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO):  Get this illegal immigrant guy, he’s a suspect in a rape in St. Pete.
HCSO Deputies get the guy on a misdemeanor.  Meanwhile, St. Pete cops called Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) asked for permission to hold the illegal immigrant further.  They get no response.
So the HCSO [...]

Splitsville Update

Wow. I must admit to being surprised at the response to the post about some crappy service at Splitsville (Splitsville, You Suck) but it seems like the attention might have helped sway Splitsville policy.
From Monkey Love, the original author of the post, comes this update -

“I just talked to Mr. Knox VIA TELEPHONE and he [...]

ending the tampa bay creative diaspora (iii)

“Do what they did, you’ll get what they got.”
I am not sure that Tampa Bay needs to reinvent the wheel on its way to urban viability, but…
Many of the cities that have truly come back from the edge and become centers of creative post-industrial life are very different from the Tampa/St Pete metro area. They [...]

Political Corruption

In July I wrote about House Democrats from Florda that changed their minds on the FISA bill, and pointed to records of donations from telecommunications companies. While taking money from an industry, and then changing your opinion about legislation affecting that industry, is not evidence of a crime, it tends to make you look a [...]

Neighborhood Coordination

The Official Unofficial Seminole Heights Blog recently asked about local neighborhood associations “What does it take to get more to volunteer and make a difference? … Can we organize and unite to be a more productive group?”
While SH was writing specifically about Seminole Heights neighborhood associations, this morning an idea occurred to me about a [...]

1962 Tiburon Roadster

Lucy Jones at My Florida History stumbles across a great find.

“The 1962 Tiburon Roadster, designed by Henry Covington in St. Petersburg, Florida. According to the exhibit sign, this roadster (and its convertible version) are the only cars designed, built, marketed, and sold in the Tampa / St. Petersburg area.”
That is one fancy car.

Music Monday

I’m a tremendous Brian Eno fan. Not only has he been one of the most creative musical minds of the twentieth century, but his work with the Long Now Foundation transformed the way I think about history and the future, and I’m still trying to work his concept of “the big here” into how I [...]

“aaugh!”-some!

I know the only thing worse than hearing a fan whine about how the officials are cheating against their favorite team is hearing a fan whine about how the officials are cheating against their FIRST PLACE team.
But seeing not one, but two utterly heinous blown calls go against the beloved home town Tampa Bay Rays [...]

big picture unveiled

Each year since 2003, the City of Tampa has chosen a photographer to chronicle the city for The Big Picture Photographer Laureate Program.

The purpose of the project was to commission an artist to photograph and respond to life in the City of Tampa. The Photographer Laureate Program is inspired by historic photographic projects including the [...]

Splitsville Tampa - Absurd Policies
Category: Blogging
To Splitsville’s owners:

I just wanted to write and express my disappointment in the experience I had at your establishment Saturday, August 23rd 2008.

I turned 30 on the 20th of August and I [...]
