When a dollar is not enough…

August 22, 2010

Thus, I want to make a few of my Religion in The City opinions a bit more clear. First, I myself do not believe that....

Oh Danny Boy

August 8, 2010

Needless to say Danny is not his real name, but he is a guy everyone recognizes. Countless people smell Danny as he comes near and most turn away from him. Danny is banned from

Speaking for my constituents

July 25, 2010

Surprised by the comments and vote of one of their government officials this week, one of my friends remarked...

A Life Worth Living

June 27, 2010

What makes a good job worth having or having a stable home any better than the transitory living of couch jumping? Could it possibly be...

Tattoo Your Heart

June 13, 2010

And at some point, without really thinking about it, I rolled up my sleeves to make a point. At that point it was not more than a couple of minutes before I could hear the little whispers about my tattoos which were now showing near my wrists. I'm not sure if it was the Holy Spirit or just a creative flash, but at that moment ...

Quick Break

May 30, 2010

I am probably aging myself, but do you remember watching that Dunkin Donut commercial about 15 years ago where a little balding man with the mustache woke up at the beginning of every commercial with the words “time to make the donuts!”

In My Language

May 16, 2010

I once thought that if I was asked to narrow the worldview or treatises for what it meant to be American, I could narrow its overall goal to --hope and the pursuit of happiness. However, in the last week I have been reminded once again that the new US battle cry is --"Who can we blame?"

The Power in Love

May 2, 2010

"I'll show him", Karen said with tears of anger in her eyes, "he won't hit me again!" The conversation had started with Karen telling me quietly that the bruise on her right eye, just above her jawbone, was an accident; she had tripped and hit a door handle. Later Karen, in talking about her husband, explained....

Rote Rituals

April 25, 2010

Do you remember your Confirmation day? For some of you it might have been a First Communion day or Bar Mitzvah. Whatever your religious background, if you were raised in a faith community, you probably participated in a liturgical, coming-of-age ceremony. I would guess for most of us, that day was not a doves-in-the-sky-cloud-parting-radical-faith-changing day. As I remember my Confirmation day...

Power in Prayer

April 4, 2010

"I wish Christians had special powers like my Ouija Board has!" I remember her saying as she and her friend stood next to me in youth group....

Is this a prayer or a speech?

March 28, 2010

Growing up, one of my family's Christmas traditions was going to my Great-grandmas' family reunion/Christmas dinner. Great-grandma had five children who each got married, 13 grandchildren, most of whom got married --and some of them, a couple of times. The house was always filled because several grandchildren had children of their own. I never really knew my Great-grandfather, but I distinctly remember my Great-grandma being 80 the whole time I knew her!

Who is this prayer for?

March 21, 2010

In the last couple of weeks Prayer has been in the minds and news of Lakeland. The City Commission has been challenged on their policy of beginning city meetings with prayer. I always think it is funny that it often takes Atheists to be the catalyst for needed religious dialogue....
