Well this time last year I tried to get Media Passes to cover a local event in advance for you, but luck was not on my side (if you believe in that kind of thing.) What happened at RTU 2009?
Tons of teenagers (and their chaperones) from around Florida gathered at Universal Studios this past weekend.

“Free Hugs”, “high five” and “marco – polo” seemed to be randomly yelled in the park throughout the night. I even got tagged by a random kid for “tag your it”. Just teenagers having a good time.

If you ask those in attendance what band they want to see during the night a different answer was usually given. Fridays line up was David Crowder Band, Fireflight, Jeremy Camp, Pillar, Remedy Drive, Seven Stories Up, Switchfoot and Saturdays concerts were of The Afters, Casting Crowns, Group 1 Crew, Hawk Nelson, New Method, Third Day, tobyMac. Compared to last year there were only 2 concert stages instead of 3. Maybe a sign that even theme parks are having a hard time in the economy?

Minutes before the tobyMac concert was to begin the crowd began shouting “Toby Toby Toby” and when he came out everyone screamed.

“This is one of my favorite shows every year because you (the audience) lives up to the name because you rock.” Said tobyMac (Kevin Michael McKeehan, formly a third of DC Talk). A “promise from myself and the diversity band to you fine people of the south is that we are going to give you everything we got babbbyyy.” The crew certainly lived up to the promise during the 75 minute set.

Rock the Universe 2010 is set for September 10-11 if it follows the same format of the second weekend in Septmber like it has been for the past several years. Tickets for 2009 Rock the Universe were $49.99 plus tax for one night and $75.99 plus tax for two nights.

Do You Heart Pie?

Don’t laugh but there is such a thing as The American Pie Council (APC). What is the mission of APC? “The American Pie Council® is the only organization dedicated to preserving America’s pie heritage and promoting America’s love affair with pies.” They are having the annual National Pie Championships and Festival next weekend in Celebration.

The Pie Championships are April 24-26 and The Great American Pie Festival will take place April 25 and 26 (right at the end of the Sun ‘n Fun Fly-in).

This seems like a pretty cool event with “The Never-Ending Pie Buffet, featuring award winning pies, ice cream, toppings and beverages featuring pies from Bakers Square, Bonert’s Slice of Pie, Edwards, Key West Key Lime Pie Co., Inc., Mrs. Smith’s Bakeries, Publix SuperMarkets Inc., Rocky Mountain Pies, Sara Lee Bakery, California Raisin Marketing Board Schwan’s Bakery, Village Inn Restaurants and Wick’s Pies. Admission to the Never Ending Pie Buffet is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and children age 6-12.”

I may just have to check out this event for myself, after all it is practically in our own backyard!

Orlando Tweetup

In January, Polk county twitter-ers (tweeps, twits, etc) met at Black and Brew to discuss everything about Twitter. Well now, Orlando area twitter-ers and those interested in becoming one have their own “Tweetup”. On Thursday, February 19th at 5:30 PM at Scruffy Murphy’s Pub in College Park, come meet with your fellow “tweeps”. This is going to be a very informal meetup. Come out and have fun!

I feel like I’m standing in front of the Soup Nazi in Seinfeld, I’ve been told No ICE for me. I’ll try not to mention the name, don’t want to give them too much publicity but I’m sure you can figure it out… This all started with a phone call at the start of December, then e-mails for media access to the “nearly two million pounds of ice” and I just got the answer today. From the PR director � “regretfully will have to decline media tickets.”

This is a news media website not just a blog. We cover news and events of all types in Orlando, Tampa and between. I like to think we can provide stories from a different perspective and give you more than other local media and news outlets. But for this story, that would have had pictures and video, we cannot.

And I was looking forward to covering this event in “a frigid 9 degrees Fahrenheit.”
