This has been a sad week for the entertainment world. Earlier, we made note of former Tonight Show announcer/sidekick Ed McMahon’s tragic passing. Today, there are two more big names from show biz to remember.
Of course, it was totally expected that we would hear of the passing of 70s sex symbol Farrah Fawcett, who finally lost her battle with cancer today. While she became a big name thanks to her incredible beauty — what red-blooded American teenage boy didn’t either have the poster of Farrah in that red swimsuit on his wall…or at least think of her in that pose — she won the respect of critics with her performances in films such as “The Burning Bed”. Farrah showed people that she would not lay down to “The Big C”, but battle every step of the way. And while she eventually did not win the battle, she showed many people that you can fight and do well.
Then this afternoon, we learned that pop superstar Michael Jackson passed away, apparantly from cardiac arrest in Los Angeles (per NBC News) at the age of 50. He was reportedly preparing for a comeback concert tour in Europe. He was one of the most gifted of the genre, first as lead singer/featured performer of the Jackson 5, then as a solo act. But for all his talent, Michael was an incredibly troubled individual.
Both are in my thoughts and prayers this evening. Hopefully they will both find peace now.
