The Sunday Chat Shows For June 28

This has been a week of losses in the world of entertainment, and especially the death of Michael Jackson has flooded the news during the past couple of days.  But now we go back to the usual world of politics and public policy as we check out what to expect on the various chat shows…

ABC  NEWS / This Week with George StephanopoulosWhite House Chief of State David Axelrod will appear to discuss President Obama‘s continued push for health care reform, the latest on the energy and climate change bill, and what’s next on the president’s agenda.  Then, the Republican perspective from U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (R – IA).  Finally, the weekly political roundtable featuring author and Georgetown University professor Eric Dyson, Paul Krugman of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, and Kathleen Parker of the Washington Post (I didn’t realize that she grew up in Winter Haven!).

CBS NEWS / Face the Nation with Bob SchiefferThis week’s guests:  U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dr. Susan Rice, and the new Chairman of the Republican Governors Association Governor Haley Barbour (R – MS).

CABLE NEWS NETWORK / State of the Union with John King:  A live progress report from Baghdad on the withdrawl of American troops from Iraqi cities with General Raymond Odierno, top U.S. commander there.  Then, a look at the future of the Republican Party focusing on Ohio.  Appearing will be Governor Tim Pawlenty (R – MN), senatorial candidate Rob Portman, and gubernatorial candidate John Kasich.  Finally, the “Last Word” segment with billionaire T. Boone Pickens,  who has a natural gas energy plan that he claims will help pull the country out of recession.

FOX NEWS / Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace:  A discussion of health care reform with Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R – KY).  Then, General Raymond Odierno will appear to discuss the withdrawl of American troops from Iraqi cities.  And the weekly roundtable featuring the regular Sunday panel of  Weekly Standard co-founder Bill Kristol, along with Juan Williams and Mara Liasson of National Public Radio.

NBC News / Meet the Press with David Gregory:  A look at President Obama‘s programme with White House Chief of Staff David Axelrod, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R – SC), and former governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney (R – MA).  Then, in the political roundtable, it will be columnists David Brooks of the New York Times and E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post, GOP strategist Mike Murphy, and former White House Press Secretary and current Contributing Editor for Vanity Fair Dee Dee Myers.

SYNDICATED / The Chris Matthews Show:  The issues – Will the street protests in Iran lead to lasting changes in the Middle East?  And will the GOP support the way President Obama wants to pay for health care?  The panelists – HDNet Global Correspondent Dan Rather, British Broadcasting Corporation Washington Correspondent Katty Kay, Washington Post Columnist David Ignatius, and New York Times White House Correspondent Helene Cooper.

WEDU – TV 3 / Florida This Week with Rob Lorei:  The issues – Governor Charlie Crist’s decision to replace Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections following her death this week,  the St. Petersburg Times investigation on the Church of Scientology, and layoffs announced today at the Hav-A-Tampa cigar factory.   The panel – Republican State Committeeman Bill Bunting, Businesswoman and Democrat Toni Moliniaro, Freelance columnist MC Coolidge, and columnist Dan Ruth.
