A Day Of Loss On Two Fronts

June 23, 2009 | Robert Pickering |

Sadly, there are two passings of note today, one from the field of local politics, the other from the world of entertainment.

We learned this morning that Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Phyllis Busansky was found dead this morning on the floor of her St. Augustine-area hotel room after she did not show up for breakfast.

According to the St. Petersburg Times:

St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Chuck Mulligan said his deputies responded to a call around 9 a.m. from the Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village. Busansky was found on the floor of her hotel room with no trauma to her body, he said, and there didn’t appear to be any foul play or struggle. She appeared to have died of natural causes.

Busansky’s physician advised detectives that her death certificate was to be signed, as she had an “extensive medical history,” according to authorities.

She had been at the resort attending a gathering of county elections officials.

And from the world of television, we learned that late night sidekick Ed McMahon died today.  For three decades late night was simply not right without the sound of Doc Severnsen and the NBC Orchestra playing “Johnny’s Theme” while Ed let us know who to expect on that night’s show, followed by the classic introduction “And now…..HEEEEEEEEEERE’S JOHNNY!”

Ed McMahon was know for much more than that.  His work hosting “Star Search”, the Publishers Clearing House commercials, his co-hosting duties on the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.  But he will always be remembered as the most famous second fiddle in show business history, of which there can never be anyone nearing comparasion.
